The Sorrowful Mysteries: Biblical References

Lay Dominican Novitiate/ O.P. Notes

The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, which gradually took form in the second millennium under the guidance of the Spirit of God, is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the Magisterium. Simple yet profound, it remains, at the dawn of this third millennium, a prayer of great significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of holiness. it blends easily into the spiritual journey o the Christian life, which, after two thousand years, has lost none of the freshness of its beginnings and feels drawn by the Spirit of God to "Set out onto the deep" (duc in altum!) in order  once more to proclaim, and even cry out, before the world that Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour, "the way, and the truth and the life" (John 14:6), "the goal of human history and the point on which the desires of history and civilization turn". ~Saint John Paul II, in his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae.

The Agony in the Garden

Biblical Sources:
Matthew 26: 36-46 "Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani; and He said to His disciples: Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray. And taking with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to grow sorrowful and to be sad. Then He saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay you here, and watch with me. And going a little further, He fell upon His face, praying, and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from Me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt..."

The Second Sorrowful Mystery:
The Scourging at the Pillar

Biblical Sources:
Matthew 27: 29-30 "And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon His head, and a reed in His right hand. And bowing the knee before Him, they mocked Him, saying: Hail, King of the Jews." And spitting upon Him, they took the reed, and struck His head."

Read also Mark 15:16-20; and John 19:2-3

The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery:
The Carrying of the Cross

Prayer Intentions: We pray for the virtue of patience, especially when suffering; and to have fortitude)

Biblical Sources:
Luke 23: 26-32 "And as they led Him away, they laid hold of one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country; and they laid the cross on him to carry after Jesus. And there followed Him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented Him. But Jesus turning to them, said: Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not over me; but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For behold, the days shall come, wherein they will say: Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the paps that have not given suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains: Fall upon us; and to the hills: Cover us. For if in the green wood they do these things, what shall be done in the dry? And there were also two other malefactors led with Him to be put to death."

The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery:
The Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord
Prayer Intentions: We pray for the grace to persevere; and to be shown mercy, as well as be merciful as the Father.

Biblical Sources:
John 19: 17-37 "And bearing His own cross, He went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha. Where they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote a title also, and he put it upon the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS...

Jesus therefore, when He had taken the vinegar, said: It is consumated. And bowing His head, He gave up the ghost..."

The Fatima Prayer: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your Mercy" --> This may be prayed after the Glory Be of each mystery.

The Loreto Litanies may also be prayed before the Salve Regina.
